Eating Out

Hohhot has the best Mongolian food in China, simply because it has the largest and most economically diverse Mongolian population. The dairy culture that the city is proud of — Yili and Mengniu have their headquarters here — is most visible on the street: yogurt in clay pots, fresh milk skin, dried cheese, and milk tea are standard accompaniments to every meal. The Hui Muslim food tradition is equally strong and operates in the same neighbourhood, making the old town area a rare place where you can eat roast lamb from a Buddhist monastery and halal flatbread from a mosque on the same afternoon walk.
