Hohhot is the best place in China to buy cashmere and Mongolian crafts. The cashmere here comes from the actual source — goats raised on the surrounding steppe — and prices at the factory outlets and wholesale markets are significantly lower than in Beijing or Shanghai. Mongolian silver jewellery, carved wooden items, felt goods, and traditional dairy products are the other worth-buying categories. The tourist market around Dazhao is convenient; the wholesale cashmere market in the industrial east of the city has better prices for larger purchases.
