Huitengxile Grasslands (Graymare Plateau)

Huitengxile — "Graymare" in Mongolian, also called the High Grassland — sits at an altitude of about 2,000 metres on the plateau northeast of Hohhot, about 150 kilometres from the city. The combination of altitude and latitude means this is one of the largest remaining intact steppe grasslands in Inner Mongolia, less converted to agriculture than the lower-altitude areas closer to the city. The wind farm that has been installed across part of the plateau is visually striking against the grassland backdrop.

The area hosts a major wind energy complex and the turbines have become part of the landscape rather than a detraction from it — driving through ranks of slowly-turning white blades across an ocean of green grass is an unexpectedly beautiful experience. The altitude brings dramatically lower temperatures than Hohhot even in summer, so bring a layer. Yurt camps operate here in summer; the remoteness and the altitude make this a better choice for travellers seeking a more rugged grassland experience than Xilamuren provides.
