Qingdao Museum

Regional museum with ancient Buddhas in a 1931 colonial building

A regional museum on Daxue Lu, housed in a 1931 building that was originally the headquarters of the Red Swastika Association (a Chinese humanitarian organisation). The collection includes Chinese paintings from the Yuan through Qing dynasties and an archaeological section with four large standing Buddha figures from 500–527 AD. The Buddhas were decapitated by the Japanese in 1928 and the heads taken to Japanese museums; the bodies, mounted in the courtyard, remain striking figures. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 8am–5pm.
