Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center

Olympic-era marina and waterfront promenade on Qingdao’s modern bayfront.

Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center was built for the sailing events of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and it remains one of the clearest symbols of the city’s modern waterfront. Marinas, flags, broad promenades, and views across Fushan Bay make it feel very different from the German-era streets to the west.

It is a good evening walk, especially when the skyline lights come on and the sea breeze cuts through the summer humidity. The site is polished and commercial in places, but it gives Qingdao a useful contemporary counterpoint to beaches, beer halls, and old concession architecture.
