Fuxing Park (Jing'an)

Small French-era park on Fuxing Road West with morning exercise crowds

A French-era park on Fuxing Road West, smaller than the main Fuxing Park in the French Concession but with the same character — morning exercises, retired residents playing cards and chess, and a general atmosphere of neighbourhood park life undisturbed by tourist traffic. The park is a useful reference point for understanding what Shanghai's residential open space looks like in use.

The surrounding Jing'an residential streets to the north and west, developed primarily in the 1920s and 1930s, have good examples of the Art Deco apartment buildings and lane houses that characterise the neighbourhood. The density of surviving pre-war residential architecture in Jing'an is among the highest in Shanghai.
