Shanghai Natural History Museum

Modern science museum at Jing'an Sculpture Park, child-friendly and ambitious

The current Shanghai Natural History Museum opened in 2015 at Jing'an Sculpture Park — a serpentine modern building wrapped around a sunken courtyard. Inside, the displays move from the origin of life through dinosaurs (including a 22-metre Mamenchisaurus on the main floor) and through the evolution of mammals, with strong sections on East Asian wildlife and traditional Chinese natural history.

It is excellent for children. Allow three hours. Buy tickets in advance online — the museum is popular with school groups and queues at weekends. Free for over-60s and under-3s.
