M50 Creative Park (Moganshan Road)

M50 cluster of contemporary art galleries in repurposed textile mills on Moganshan Road

The concentration of contemporary art galleries in repurposed industrial buildings along Moganshan Road is Shanghai's equivalent of Beijing's 798 — a cluster of independent galleries, studios, and creative businesses in a former textile mill complex that has been the centre of Shanghai's commercial art world since the early 2000s.

Unlike 798, M50 has resisted tourist-facility creep better and remains primarily a working gallery and studio district. The galleries are generally open Tuesday–Sunday and free to enter; a Saturday afternoon walk through the complex will typically encounter several shows simultaneously. The concentration of serious commercial galleries makes this the best single place to see contemporary Chinese art production in Shanghai. Metro Changshu Road, then walk north.
