Vishalla was opened in 1978 by the late industrialist Surendra Patel as a recreation of a Gujarati village dining experience. Diners sit on the floor on woven mats, are served on palas leaf-plates by waiters in traditional dress, and eat the standard Gujarati thali while a string of performances — puppet shows, folk dance, classical music — runs in the open courtyards. There is also an excellent and free Vechaar Utensils Museum on the same site, with over 4,500 traditional kitchen and water utensils from across India.
The whole place is theatrical but the food is genuinely good. Lunch and dinner sittings; book ahead. About 40 minutes' drive from the centre.
