Hemchandracharya Jain Gyan Mandir

A library and manuscript repository named after Hemachandra, the 12th-century Jain polymath who tutored the Solanki king Kumarapala and effectively made Patan one of the great centres of Jain learning in India. The collection of palm-leaf and paper manuscripts is one of the most important in the world for Jain studies, with works on philosophy, grammar, astronomy, and medicine in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Apabhramsa.

For non-scholars the appeal is mostly conceptual — the manuscripts are not on open display — but the librarians are friendly and will show visitors a few illustrated leaves if asked politely. Worth a stop if you are interested in the intellectual history of the place, less so otherwise.
