Sahasralinga Tank

A few hundred metres east of Rani ki Vav, the Sahasralinga Talav — the "Lake of a Thousand Lingas" — was a medieval reservoir built around the same time as the stepwell, fed by a canal from the Saraswati river. In its heyday it had a thousand small Shiva shrines lining the embankments, hence the name. Today most of those are gone, but enough of the stone tank walls, sluice gates, and a few of the linga shrines survive to give a sense of the engineering.

It is in ruins, dry for most of the year, and unmanaged — locals walk dogs on the embankments and cattle graze around the perimeter. Combined with Rani ki Vav next door it tells the story of how seriously the Solankis took their hydraulic infrastructure. Skip it if you are short on time; visit if you have an hour to spare and an interest in medieval water systems.
