What remains of medieval Patan's fortifications is fragmentary but easy to spot if you know what you are looking at. The Solankis enclosed the city with a stone-and-brick wall punctuated by gates, of which the most intact stretches lie along the road between the new bus stand and Rani ki Vav. A few towers and a stretch of crenellated rampart give a sense of the scale of the ancient capital, which was many times larger than the present town.
There is no formal viewing area and no signage — you simply notice the walls as you drive past. Worth a brief stop for the photo and to register that the small dusty town you are walking through was once the political centre of western India.
