Jain Derasars of the Old Town

Patan has well over a hundred Jain temples — locals will tell you 108 — clustered in the labyrinth of lanes around Panchasara Parshvanath. Most are small family or community shrines, locked except at puja times in early morning and late afternoon. A short wander reveals temple after temple, many with finely carved wooden doorways, painted ceilings, and marble interiors out of all proportion to their dusty exteriors.

The best approach is to come at around 5pm when the temples open for evening prayers. You can step inside several in an hour. Photography of the inner shrines is generally not allowed, but courtyards and doorways are fair game. Wear modest clothing and remove shoes and leather.
