Basheshwar Mahadev Temple

In the village of Bajaura on the southern edge of Kullu town stands one of the finest stone temples in the Western Himalayas. Built sometime between the 8th and 10th centuries in the North Indian Nagara style, the Basheshwar Mahadev temple is dedicated to Shiva and is covered in detailed sculpture: dancing figures, river goddesses, scenes from Hindu mythology.

It is a working temple, still in daily use, and the priests will explain the imagery if you are interested. A short detour off the highway to Kullu — the stop takes maybe 30 minutes but it is one of the most rewarding cultural sights in the valley.
