Raghunath Temple

The Raghunath temple is the spiritual heart of Kullu, a modest two-storey structure of stone and wood on a hill above the bazaar. The deity housed here is the focus of the Kullu Dussehra, the festival that brings the valley together every October.

The temple is open to all and the priests are generally welcoming. There is little ornament — what makes the place is its standing as the supreme god of Kullu, and the long ritual calendar that organises the year around its courtyard.

A story
The temple's central image of Raghunath (Lord Rama) was supposedly stolen from Ayodhya in 1651 by a Kullu raja's servant to atone for a curse the king had brought on himself. The deity is still considered the reigning monarch of the entire Kullu valley — every Dussehra, more than 200 village gods are carried in palanquins to pay homage to him.
