Manikaran Hot Springs

Forty-five kilometres up the Parvati valley, the village of Manikaran is built around natural hot springs revered by both Sikhs and Hindus. A large Sikh gurdwara dominates the centre; a Hindu temple sits across the bridge; both make use of the steaming water for ritual baths.

The setting is striking: a narrow valley with sheer pine-covered walls, the icy green Parvati river crashing through, and clouds of steam rising from the springs. The gurdwara provides free accommodation and food to all visitors as Sikh tradition requires. Modest dress is expected near the temples.

A story
The water rises here at temperatures up to 95°C — hot enough that pilgrims and travellers cook rice and dal in cloth bags lowered into the spring. The gurdwara serves langar prepared this way, which means the same water that boils your meal also pours into the temple's bathing pools.
