Leh Palace is a nine-storey structure built in the 17th century by the Ladakh ruler Sengge Namgyal. Modelled loosely on the Potala Palace in Lhasa, it towers over the old town and provides panoramic views across the Indus Valley to the mountains. The palace was abandoned when the royal family moved to Stok Palace, and parts of it are now in ruins, but the Archaeological Survey of India maintains sections for visitors. The walk up through the old town's winding alleys and steep scree slopes takes about 20 minutes and should only be attempted after acclimatising to the altitude.
