Confluence of the Zanskar and Indus Rivers

Dramatic Ladakh viewpoint where the green Indus and darker Zanskar meet below the Leh-Kargil road.

The confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers is one of the simplest but most memorable stops outside Leh. From the road viewpoint, the two rivers meet in a bare Ladakhi valley of folded rock, often showing distinct colours before the currents merge. The scale is stark, with almost no greenery to soften the scene.

It is an easy stop on the route toward Nimmu, Alchi, or Lamayuru, and it photographs best when the sun is high enough to reach the valley floor. In winter, the frozen Zanskar becomes part of the Chadar trekking route; in warmer months, rafting trips may use stretches of the river below. Either way, it is a strong reminder that Ladakh is shaped by water as much as by mountains.
