Built by Lingarajendra II in 1820 to atone for a political assassination, the Omkareshwara Temple is striking for its hybrid look: a Hindu shrine to Shiva housed in a building that owes as much to Indo-Islamic architecture as it does to South Indian temple tradition. There is a central dome flanked by four corner minarets and a small tank with fish in the courtyard.
It is in the lower part of Madikeri, a five-minute walk from the bazaar. Take off your shoes, leave any offerings in the appropriate places, and don't photograph the inner sanctum.
