Talakaveri

The source of the Kaveri river, a Hindu pilgrimage site at 1,276 metres.

Talakaveri sits on the slopes of Brahmagiri, about 48km west of Madikeri, and is the source of the Kaveri river — one of the seven sacred rivers of Hinduism. The site itself is a small temple complex with a sacred tank and a steep staircase climbing to a viewpoint at the top of the ridge.

From the top on a clear day you can see all the way across the Coorg hills and, in the dry season, down to the coastal plain of Karnataka. The drive up from Madikeri is half the experience: tight switchbacks, coffee estates dropping away on either side, and the temperature falling as you climb.

A story
Each year on Tula Sankramana (mid-October), a small spring in the temple tank suddenly gushes forth — pilgrims gather hours in advance to bottle the holy water. Geologists explain it as a seasonal aquifer effect; pilgrims call it Kaveri Amma rising.
