Kanakeshwar Forest Temple

A Shiva temple at the top of a wooded hill about 15 km northeast of Alibaug, reached by a steep climb of around 750 stone steps through dense forest. The temple dates from the seventeenth century and is a popular pilgrimage stop on the festival days of Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays.

The walk is the main draw — the forest is good, with monkeys and abundant birdlife, and the summit clears suddenly onto a temple compound with views back to the coast. Early morning is best; bring water.
