Ram Kund is the principal ghat on the Godavari River in Nashik, and the most sacred spot in the city. Pilgrims come here to bathe in the Godavari, whose waters are considered capable of washing away sins. Priests line the steps performing rituals, and the ghats are in near-constant use from before dawn. The site is believed to be where Lord Rama bathed during his exile in the forest.
The ghats are busy and atmospheric at all hours, but early morning is especially striking — the low light on the river, the bells and prayers from the nearby temples, and the sheer volume of activity give a vivid picture of living Hindu practice. Visitors of all faiths are welcome to watch from the steps.
