Ramshej Fort is a rugged hill fort north of Nashik, reached by a relatively short but exposed climb. The surviving walls, rock-cut steps, cisterns, and plateau views make it a satisfying introduction to the forts scattered across Maharashtra’s dry hills.
The fort is best treated as an early-morning outing, especially outside the cooler months. There is little shade on the ascent, but the reward is a wide look over farms, ridges, and the approaches to Nashik, with enough history on the hilltop to hold your attention.
