Mindrolling Monastery and Great Stupa

The Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Clement Town, on the southern edge of the city, is one of the most important seats of the Nyingma school in exile. The complex includes a working monastery, a school for young monks, and an enormous painted stupa that towers above the surrounding suburbs.

The site is open to visitors and free, though donations support the school. The terrace gardens around the stupa are quiet and well-kept; the late afternoon, when monks are chanting in the temple, is the best time.

A story
The Great Stupa here is 56 metres tall — the largest stupa in the world — and was completed in 2002 after eleven years of construction by hundreds of Tibetan artisans. The four lower floors hold a museum of Tibetan religious art with full-size statues of the Buddha and intricate thangka paintings.
