Paltan Bazaar

The main market street of old Dehradun runs south from the Clock Tower, a noisy, narrow, partly arcaded lane of cloth shops, silver workshops, sweet stalls, and stationery sellers. It is one of the oldest commercial streets in the city — palton means a battalion, and the bazaar was originally laid out to serve the British military cantonment.

Pause at one of the chaat stalls for a plate of aloo tikki or papri chaat; pause at the sweet shops for the local speciality, bal mithai, a fudge-like preparation from neighbouring Kumaon. Closed Sundays.
