Ambedkar Memorial Park

The Ambedkar Memorial Park is a vast pink sandstone monument complex in Gomti Nagar that fills 107 acres with domes, courtyards, colonnades, and enormous bronze elephants. It was built in honour of Dr B.R. Ambedkar — the author of the Indian constitution — and a series of Dalit leaders, with sixty-two bronze elephant statues encircling the central plaza and a hundred-and-fifty-foot domed memorial at its heart.

The architecture is monumental, deliberately overwhelming, and unlike anything else in Lucknow. Walk it in the late afternoon when the light is on the sandstone; entry is cheap, the security is heavy, and bags are screened. The adjacent Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan holds the largest public political rally ground in India.

A story
The park was built between 2002 and 2010 by the BSP government of Mayawati at a reported cost of around seven billion rupees. Construction reportedly consumed over a hundred and fifty thousand tonnes of red sandstone, almost all of it quarried in Rajasthan and shipped across the country.
