La Martinière College, properly known as Constantia, is one of the strangest large buildings in India: a four-storey late-eighteenth-century country house that combines Italianate, Mughal, French neoclassical, and Gothic elements into something that resembles nothing else in any direction. Claude Martin designed it for himself as his private residence; he died in 1800, and under the terms of his will it became a boys' school, which it remains to this day.
The building is occupied by the school and access to the interior is restricted, but the exterior is visible from the long approach drive and the surrounding grounds (open to visitors on weekend mornings on application at the gate). The plaster lions, the broken columns, and the strange dome combine for one of the most photographic facades in north India. Allow time to walk the long lake at the back.
