Robertsganj

Sonbhadra district town near fossil beds, valley viewpoints, folklore stones, and Kaimur country.

Robertsganj is a working town in southeastern Uttar Pradesh, well away from the state's famous Ganges cities. It sits in Sonbhadra district, where the flat north Indian plain starts to break into older stone, forested hills, and river valleys.

The town itself is not the attraction. The reason to come is the small cluster of unusual stops nearby: Salkhan Fossils Park, the Son View Point, and the split rock of Veer Lorik Stone. Together they make a good short detour from Varanasi if you are interested in geology, folklore, or the rougher edge of the Vindhyan landscape.

Robertsganj is not set up like a polished tourist town. Go in the cooler months, keep expectations practical, and treat the appeal as offbeat rather than easy.
