Chiplun

Inland Konkan town on the Vashishti River, used as a gateway to Sahyadri forests and forts.

Chiplun is the main inland town of Ratnagiri district, set on the Vashishti River where the Konkan coast begins to climb toward the Sahyadri hills. It is not a beach town, and that is the point. Chiplun is greener, quieter, and more river-focused than the coast, with mango orchards, temple villages, backwater edges, and monsoon waterfalls close by.

The town makes a useful break on the Mumbai-Goa highway or Konkan Railway, especially if you want to move between the coast and the Ghats. The essential local stops are Parshuram Temple, the Vashishti River, and Gowalkot Fort. With more time, the hills around Koyna and the Dervan complex make good excursions.

Chiplun is at its best in and just after the monsoon, when the valleys turn intensely green. In the dry season it becomes more of a practical base than a destination in itself, but the food, river air, and easy access to the Sahyadris still make it worth a stop.

Getting Around

Auto-rickshaws cover the town and nearby temples. For Gowalkot, Dervan, Koyna, or scattered river viewpoints, hire a car or arrange a driver.

The town itself is not difficult, but the best places around Chiplun are separated by hills, bridges, and highway stretches. Do not plan it as a walking destination.

Getting There

Chiplun sits on the Mumbai-Goa highway and on the Konkan Railway. Trains connect it with Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Goa, and points farther south, while buses and private vehicles use the highway through the river valley.

Road travel is scenic but slow in the monsoon, when landslides, repairs, and heavy rain can affect the Ghats and coastal routes.

When to Go

June to September is the greenest season, with waterfalls and misty hills, but heavy rain can slow travel. October to February is more comfortable for moving around and still keeps some of the post-monsoon freshness.

April and May are hot and humid, though mango season gives the wider Ratnagiri district a very good excuse for lingering.
