ARMA (Agung Rai Museum of Art)

Large cultural complex with Balinese and Indonesian art, dance, and gardens

The Agung Rai Museum of Art on Jalan Pengosekan is the largest and most comprehensive art institution in Ubud, founded by collector Agung Rai in 1996. The collection covers Balinese painting from the classical period through the 1930s Western-influenced school to contemporary Balinese and Indonesian artists. There is also a permanent collection of traditional masks and ceremonial objects.

The museum complex includes extensive tropical gardens, open-air pavilions, a library, a cooking school, and the attached Kafe Arma. Traditional Balinese dance and music performances are staged in the garden amphitheatre several evenings a week. The whole complex is large enough to take a couple of hours to explore properly. It sits on the quieter southern edge of town, away from the Monkey Forest crowd, and the journey between the museum and the town centre passes through some good street-art and crafts workshops.
