Ubud Market

Craft market opposite the Palace selling textiles, woodcarvings, and jewellery

The Ubud Market occupies the corner directly opposite the palace at the main intersection of town, and spreads into the surrounding lanes. The covered market section sells sarongs, ikat textiles, silver jewellery, woodcarvings, paintings, stone carvings, and the full range of Balinese craft objects. The morning market in the covered hall below sells produce and food for local residents — a much more interesting scene than the craft stalls and worth a look before 9am when the tourist day begins.

Bargaining is expected in the craft stalls — prices are not fixed and starting offers are typically two to three times the acceptable price. Take your time and be cheerful about it; aggressive bargaining is unpleasant for everyone. The quality varies enormously, and the best pieces are worth paying more for.
