The villages surrounding Ubud — Mas, Celuk, Batubulan, Batuan, Peliatan, Penestanan — have been craft centres for generations, each specialising in something different: woodcarving in Mas, silverwork in Celuk, stone carving in Batubulan, painting in Batuan. The roads between them run through rice fields and past small temples and village ceremonies, and the whole area is ideal for cycling at a pace that allows you to stop and look.
Bicycles are available for rent throughout Ubud for a few dollars a day. A good half-day loop goes south toward Mas, west to Penestanan (with views back over the river gorge), and back through the rice terraces north of town. Ask at your accommodation for a map and current road condition advice; some paths flood seasonally. The terrain is mostly flat to gentle; the only difficult stretch is the climb back up out of the Campuhan river valley.
