Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi is an 11th-century temple and royal memorial complex north of Ubud, cut into the cliffs beside the Pakerisan River. The tall rock-cut shrines are usually linked with King Anak Wungsu and his family.

Reaching the site means descending a long stone stairway through rice terraces and small shops. The setting is part of the appeal: the valley feels cooler and quieter than the road above, with the river running below the carved monuments. Bring a sarong or rent one at the entrance.
