Pura Kehen

A richly carved state temple in Bangli, known for its stepped courtyards and old banyan tree.

Pura Kehen is one of the finest temples within easy reach of Ubud, though it actually sits in Bangli rather than in the town itself. The approach is part of the pleasure: a steep flight of stone steps climbs through carved gateways into a sequence of courtyards, with shrines, pavilions, guardian figures, and old brickwork packed tightly into the hillside.

It is less theatrical than Ubud's dance venues and less crowded than the Monkey Forest, which makes it a good half-day excursion if you want Balinese temple architecture without the crush. Dress respectfully, wear a sarong, and give yourself time to notice the details: the split gates, the tiered meru roofs, and the vast banyan tree that anchors the temple compound.
