Books

Indonesia Menggugat by Sukarno. The defence speech Sukarno wrote in 1930 while imprisoned at the Banceuy Prison in central Bandung. It became one of the founding documents of Indonesian nationalism. Short, fiery, and still widely read.

This Earth of Mankind (Bumi Manusia) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The first of the Buru Quartet, set in the late-colonial Dutch East Indies. Not Bandung-specific but the best introduction to the Java that Dutch Bandung emerged from — and a book that helps you read the Asia-Afrika Conference of 1955 in its full context.

Twilight in Jakarta by Mochtar Lubis. A 1950s political novel by one of Indonesia's great journalists, capturing the texture of independence-era urban Java. Useful background for any visit to Bandung's colonial-modern core.

The Bandung Connection by Roeslan Abdulgani. A first-person account of organising the 1955 Bandung Conference, written by Indonesia's foreign minister at the time. The best context for visiting the Gedung Merdeka and the Asian-African Conference Museum.
