The volcanic landscape around Bandung is the real draw. Tangkuban Perahu, the most-visited destination, is 30km north — an active volcano whose main crater you can reach by road and peer into from the rim, with sulphur vents and a lunar landscape at 2,084 metres. From there it is worth continuing to the Ciater hot springs, where natural thermal pools sit in a tea plantation. The scenery on the road through the tea country is excellent.
To the south, Kawah Putih is a striking turquoise sulphuric lake set in a collapsed caldera near Ciwidey, 46km from Bandung. The same area has strawberry farms you can pick from, and Situ Patenggang, a peaceful highland lake nearby, completes the loop. Combine with Ranca Upas for a relaxing day among deer and tea bushes.
Closer to the city, Maribaya and Tebing Keraton above Dago are an easy half-day for forest walks and a sunrise viewpoint. The Lembang Floating Market and Farmhouse Lembang are popular family stops on the way north.
