Jalan Cihampelas Statues

Comic-book sized superhero figures looming over the original Jeans Street

When Bandung's first wave of denim shops set up along Jalan Cihampelas in the 1980s, the owners hit on the gimmick of mounting giant fibreglass superheroes — Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, the Hulk, Rambo and others — above their shop fronts to attract attention. The competition got increasingly absurd through the 1990s. Many have been removed but a couple of dozen survive.

The statues themselves are unlicensed, comically oversized, and starting to feel like vintage Indonesian pop history. A slow stroll up the street from Pasupati Bridge takes about 30 minutes. Easy to combine with the Cihampelas Walk shopping arcade.
