The tomb of Sunan Gunung Jati, one of the nine Wali Songo saints who spread Islam across Java in the 15th and 16th centuries, sits about 5km north of the city centre. It is one of the most important Islamic pilgrimage sites on Java and draws thousands of visitors, particularly during Maulid (the Prophet's birthday), when the roads north of Cirebon can be dense with pilgrims. Non-Muslims are welcome in the outer areas of the complex. The surrounding village has stalls selling batik, snacks, and religious items.
