Things to Do

Cirebon's main draw is its pair of royal palaces — Keraton Kasepuhan and Keraton Kanoman — rivals in origin but complementary to visit. Both are open and hold collections of royal heirlooms and batik that reflect the city's layered Javanese, Sundanese, and Chinese heritage. Beyond the palaces, the tomb of Sunan Gunung Jati draws pilgrims from across Java; it is one of the most significant Islamic pilgrimage sites on the island. The old town also contains mosques that show the same cultural fusion, with Chinese and Javanese decorative elements fused into 16th-century brick architecture.
