Candi Kidal is a 13th-century temple east of Malang, linked to the Singhasari kingdom and known for its reliefs of Garuda. It is smaller than the major temple sites of Central Java, but its proportions and sculptural detail make it a rewarding stop in East Java.
The temple works best as part of a circuit with Candi Singosari and other pre-Majapahit remains around Malang. You need some interest in history to justify the trip, but the site gives useful depth to a city often used mainly as a base for Bromo or Batu.
