Mahakam Waterfront

The Mahakam River waterfront is the lifeblood of Samarinda and the best place to absorb the city's character. The Mahakam here is wide enough that the far bank seems almost remote, and the traffic on it — coal barges, public ferries, speedboats loading for the upriver journey, dugout canoes — tells you immediately that this is a river city built on trade and movement.

In the evenings the waterfront promenade fills with families, food vendors, and people watching the light change on the water. The smell of grilling fish and coconut rice cooking in banana leaves drifts along the bank. This is where you arrange river transport, watch the sun set over the Mahakam, and begin to understand why towns like Samarinda exist where they do: rivers are roads here, and the people of the interior depend on this waterfront as their link to the outside world.
