Masjid Raya Darussalam

The Masjid Raya Darussalam — the Great Mosque of Samarinda — is the historic congregational mosque at the city's centre, predating the Islamic Centre by several decades. It stands near the Mahakam waterfront in the older part of the city, where its minarets have oriented the neighbourhood's geography for generations.

The mosque is active and busy, with worshippers spilling onto the surrounding streets for Friday prayers. The area around it is the most traditionally atmospheric part of Samarinda, with small warung food stalls, batik shops, and the bustle of river commerce. Coming here in the early morning or at dusk gives you the best sense of how the city's old Muslim trading quarter once functioned. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly and ask before entering.
