Pampang Cultural Village

Pampang Cultural Village, about 23 kilometres north of central Samarinda, is a living Kenyah Dayak settlement that holds weekly cultural performances every Sunday morning. The Kenyah are one of the major Dayak groups of Borneo, known for their elaborate beadwork, large longhouses, and distinctive music played on the sape, a carved wooden lute.

The village's longhouse — a communal dwelling that traditionally housed an entire community under one roof — is still actively used, and visitors can walk through and see daily life alongside the performance. The dancing and music are genuine community events rather than purely tourist productions. The beadwork, hornbill feather headdresses, and tattooing traditions on display here represent thousands of years of Bornean cultural heritage. Pampang is the most accessible introduction to Dayak culture available from Samarinda without taking a multi-day river journey.

A story
The Kenyah Dayak community in Pampang migrated here from the upper Mahakam region in the 1970s when their ancestral lands were threatened by logging. They rebuilt their longhouse traditions in a peri-urban village and have maintained them ever since — the cultural performances are not a reconstruction but an extension of genuine community practice.
