Fort Rotterdam

Built by the Dutch in the 17th century on the site of an earlier Makassarese fort, Fort Rotterdam is one of the best-preserved examples of VOC-era architecture anywhere in Indonesia. Its whitewashed walls and bastions enclose a cluster of colonial buildings in surprisingly good condition. Inside, the La Galigo Museum traces South Sulawesi history from the ancient kingdoms through the Bugis and Makassar seafaring era to the colonial period — worthwhile even for those who usually skip museums. The fort sits right on the waterfront just north of Losari Beach, making it easy to combine both in a single afternoon.
