Mashki Gate

Reconstructed Assyrian city gate on the ancient walls of Nineveh

Mashki Gate is one of the ancient gates of Nineveh, the Assyrian capital whose walls still shape the eastern side of Mosul. Like the nearby Adad Gate, it is important less as a decorative monument than as evidence of the enormous scale of the ancient city.

The gate has suffered from modern conflict and reconstruction has been uneven, so visit with current local guidance and realistic expectations. For anyone interested in Mesopotamian history, it is still a powerful stop: a physical edge of one of the ancient world's great capitals.
