The Mosque of the Prophet Yunus stands on one of Mosul's most charged sites. The hill has long been associated with Jonah, or Yunus, and the shrine was a place of Muslim devotion before it was destroyed during the Islamic State occupation in 2014.
The site also revealed older history after the destruction, including remains connected with ancient Nineveh. For travellers, it is not a simple sightseeing stop: access and conditions can change, and the emotional weight is heavy. But as part of Mosul's story of loss, excavation, and reconstruction, Nabi Yunus is essential.
