Old City Market (Shuk)

Working Arab market in the covered streets of the old city

Acre's covered market is a genuine working market, not a tourist reconstruction. The vaulted passages of the old city — some going back to the Ottoman period, some built on Crusader foundations — house butchers, bakers, spice sellers, and vegetable stalls alongside the cafes and falafel shops.

The hummus at Abu Dhabi and Uri Buri restaurants near the market are famous throughout Israel. The market gets busy in the mornings when it is most alive; by early afternoon things quiet down. Fridays are particularly good, when stalls expand into nearby streets before the Sabbath.
