Hijiyama Park rises just southeast of central Hiroshima, high enough to give a quick change of air without turning into a major excursion. Paths climb through trees to viewpoints over the delta city, and the park is especially pleasant in spring when the cherry blossoms pull local families up the hill.
The draw is not only the greenery. The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art and the Hiroshima City Manga Library sit in the park, so it works well as a half-day stop for travelers who want a quieter counterpoint to the Peace Memorial area. Come by tram or bus, then walk; the slope is part of the visit.
