Hiroshima's Peace Pagoda stands on Mount Futaba, a white Buddhist stupa built in the 1960s by followers of the Nipponzan Myohoji order. It is not a large complex, but the symbolism is clear in a city where peace memorials are never abstract.
The walk up is the reason many travellers remember it. Approaching through the Futaba hillside and shrine paths gives you a break from central Hiroshima, and the view from near the pagoda opens across the city towards the delta and surrounding hills.
