Senjokaku

Senjokaku is the enormous unfinished wooden hall above Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima. Its name means "pavilion of one thousand mats", though the real floor area is closer to 857 tatami mats, and the emptiness is part of the effect.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the hall in 1587, but work stopped after his death. The result is a grand, open timber shell with views toward the shrine and bay. A five-storey pagoda stands nearby, making this an easy and worthwhile addition to a visit to Itsukushima Shrine.
